Currency Converted Prices
Currency converted sale prices are now live, converting historical non-GBP domain sales into accurate GBP equivalents based on historic exchange rates.
Currency-converted prices are now live across the site.
When viewing historical domain sales that were transacted in non-GBP currencies, you'll now see a second price: the equivalent value in GBP at the time of sale, based on accurate historical exchange rates. This brings international sales into context and enables better like-for-like comparisons. Currency conversions are also shown alongside inflation adjustments where applicable, giving you an even more accurate view of past sales in today's terms.
Why?
A domain sold for $5,000 in 2010 means something entirely different depending on the exchange rate at the time. Previously, international sales were left unconverted, which made them difficult to compare directly with UK-based transactions.
Now you can see both:
- The original sale price in its transaction currency
- The historical GBP equivalent based on the exchange rate at the time of sale
- The inflation-adjusted GBP equivalent, showing what the converted value is worth in today's terms
How It Works
- Exchange rates are sourced from a historical forex API (frankfurter.dev)
- Conversions are applied once per transaction and cached permanently
- Prices are always converted to GBP, using the exchange rate on the transaction's recorded sale date
- No manual overrides or estimates — just accurate historic data
Limitations
- We currently support conversion from EUR and USD; other currencies will be added if needed
- Conversion rates reflect the recorded sale date, but don't adjust for intra-day fluctuations
- Converted and inflation-adjusted prices are computed in-memory, which means sorting and filtering by these values is not yet possible at the database level
What's Next
This feature unlocks deeper insights into the global market. Looking ahead:
- Support for advanced database queries using converted and adjusted prices for filtering and sorting
- Integration of converted and adjusted prices into the public API responses
- UI-level query builder allowing users to search and filter based on converted or inflation-adjusted price ranges
- Enhanced breakdowns showing the applied conversion rate
- Optional user settings to toggle converted and adjusted pricing visibility
We want to make historical sales easier to interpret and more meaningful across currencies. This is another step toward a more transparent domain sales history platform.
